Dutch luggers entering harbour, Dunkirk, France
Oil painting signed and dated by Arthur Meadows, showing ships on a rough sea entering Dunkirk harbour. Many people are waiting on the dockside for the arrival of the ships. A lugger is a small ship with two or three masts with a lugsail on each - a lugsail being an asymmetrical four-sided sail.

MEADOWS, Arthur Joseph
British ( 1843 - 1907)
Arthur Joseph Meadows specialised in painting harbour and coastal scenes across England, France and Holland. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and Suffolk Street in London between 1863 and 1867. His sons, James Edwin and James Junior, also became noted artists, though the father is generally considered to be the best of the group.
There is an example of Arthur Joseph Meadows' work in the National Martime Museum.
