Dutch Boats off Sheveling
Arthur Joseph Meadows.
A beautifully detailed and accurately painted impression of small Dutch coasters and fishing boats on a breezy day off the coast of Sheveling, near the Hague in Holland. Arthur was born in 1843 one of three sons of painter James Meadows, taught by his father he adopted a style utilising subdued pastel tones, which perfectly reflected the morning and evening seascape skies. Living in London and then Dover, Arthur’s work took him all along the south and east coasts of England and also into France, Holland and the Mediterranean. During his lifetime Meadow’s work was extremely popular, commanding very high fees for the time and also exhibited extensively in major British galleries including the Royal Academy, British Institution and Royal Society of British Artists and today at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich.
